How to reach Kedarnath?
By road: An 8-hour journey from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun and around 13 hours from Delhi.
By train: Reach the same three cities of Uttarakhand (Haridwar, Rishikesh, & Dehradun) and then continue by road.
By flight: The closest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun.
Also, please note that you first need to reach Sonprayag, which is the last point accessible by a private car. From there, you can take a local cab for 5 km to Gaurikund, and then cover the remaining 18 km by walking, palki, horse, or helicopter.
Where to stay?
Day 1: Arrive in Haridwar and stay there, or prefer Dehradun or Rishikesh.
Day 2: Leave for Guptkashi or Sonprayag, both are close to each other stay here for the night.
Day 3: Start the 18 km long Yatra and stay at Kedarnath Dham, Camps, Guest house & Dharamshala are available.
Day 4: Return back from Yatra and stay at Sonprayag, Guptkashi or even Sitapur.
What’s the route for 18 km long trek till the Kedarnath Temple?
The last town where a car or bus can drop you is Sonprayag, and from here, you will take a local shared taxi that will drop you at Gaurikund. Then, from Gaurikund, you can either walk or take a horse/palki to reach Kedarnath Dham by 4-6 pm, as the temple closes at 9 pm.
Be prepared for a 2-3 hour or longer wait, and if possible, try for the morning darshan, which starts at 4 am. After the darshan and a one-night stay at Kedarnath, return to Gaurikund, then Sonprayag, and rest for the day.
