Bada Bagh was built back in the 16th century by former kings of Jaisalmer. Interestingly, there were no chhatris at Bada Bagh in those times, & it was not a memorial place either, when it was built in those early days.

A king by the name of Rawal Jaisal had built a dam & water tank at a place just outside Jaisalmer, which provided water to its people. The building of the dam and water reservoir added some greenery, which you can still see at Bada Bagh.

But later on, the sons & grandsons of those kings built chhatris or memorials in memory of their ancestors at the place, which today we know as Bada Bagh.

These chhatris are beautiful to look at, & have the most fantastic architecture and carvings on stone.

These chhatris are situated close to each other, & each have a stone inscription with the name of the king or queen in whose memory it was built.

The yellow colored chhatris look very beautiful against the background of the greenery & the region around Bada Bagh has a lot of windmills which make the landscape even more scenic and picturesque.

At times of sunsets, the chhatris seem golden in color in the light of the golden rays of the setting sun. They are perfect place for history lovers, photographers, and honeymoon couples.

Avoid coming here in the afternoons as the sun’s rays are very hot and scorching heat will not allow you to enjoy Bada Bagh.
